With both political parties in Washington trying to hammer out a deal to avoid defaulting on the nation's $14 trillion debt, you may be wondering what got us into this predicament.
The Washington Post has endeavored to answer one-third of that question with a new interactive circle graph.
The interactive is based on a 2011 Congressional Budget Office Estimate of what policies have contributed to the debt. One-third of the debt is said to be from the combination of the 2009 Stimulus package, the 2001 and 2003 Bush tax cuts and appropriations funding for the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.
