Gov. Rick Perry says that Austin, all weirdness aside, is the little engine that could on high tech.
Appearing on Thursday night before about 40 biotech leaders at an event sponsored by Austin-based investment firm Sant� Ventures, Perry said that Boston's Route 128 corridor and the Northern California Bay Area's Silicon Valley should watch out.
The two legendary high-tech incubators may have enjoyed overwhelming advantages in the past, but they're in states with fiscal and regulatory policies that retard entrepreneurship, Perry said in keynote remarks at the meeting. It was held at the new venue for the Austin City Limits television show in downtown Austin.
"They've gotten swept up in regional and state troubles," Perry said of Route 128 and Silicon Valley. "They began to lose their edge. Lacking the flexibility to change with the times, they unintentionally opened the door for younger, craftier regions to make a stake on that claim as the next big place to be. It's time for Central Texas to stake our claim."
The Republican governor quickly segued to a pitch for his controversy-plagued Emerging Technology Fund, which has survived the legislative session, though it so far hasn't been given new funds - just permission to use unspent money from last session.
