A Final Salute to Sgt. Joe Montgomery, War Hero for Us All

Four years ago this week, Sgt. Joey Montgomery was in the middle of his journey from Iraq to the cemetery down the road from his mother's house in Scottsburg, Indiana. I wrote about that journey in 2008 in a story called "The Things That Carried Him." It was a long story — too long when I filed it — and some parts had to be cut. One of those parts was the warrior's memorial, the final salute given to Joey back in Iraq.

Now, this week, when so many people are thinking about family members and friends they've lost in wars, we thought we'd post that scene. Because it wasn't part of the story, it wasn't line-edited. It also includes the ranks of the soldiers, which we took out of the final version to make the story easier to read. This is as it was when I first wrote it....
