Democratic congressional campaign chief sees deja vu in Texas redistricting

Our Washington Bureau chief emeritus, Carl P. Leubsdorf, checks in with an update on congressional redistricting:

The chairman of the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee likened the new Texas Republican congressional districting plan to the re-run of a 1950s television sitcom.

"It's like an 'I Love Lucy' re-run 10 years later,' Rep. Steve Israel, D-N.Y., told reporters at a breakfast sponsored by the Christian Science Monitor, referring to the similarly pro-GOP plan that former U.S. House Majority Leader Tom DeLay helped orchestrate in 2003.

Israel noted that the new Republican plan strengthens the re-election chances of freshman GOP Reps. Blake Farenthold of Corpus Christi and Francisco Canseco of San Antonio, adding "it's fair to say" it will be challenged in court. The plan could give Republicans three of the four seats Texas gains from its population increase, even though the biggest factor in its growth is the increase of Hispanics.
