It was inevitable after a night like that. Someone somewhere would call for Nick Clegg to resign. The defeated leader of Nottingham's Lib Dems, Gary Long, was the first to the microphone. If he got the backing of 74 local parties there would have to be a leadership contest. But where are they? And who support such an idea? And who would run against Clegg?
What is striking so far is that those councillors who lost in Sheffield and Liverpool and Hull gave their leader and the Coalition their backing. So too did backbench rebels Mike Hancock and Adrian Saunders...and Chris Huhne, who was widely thought to be "on manoeuvres" after his clash over the Cabinet table with David Cameron and George Osborne...and Tim Farron the party's president and young pretender.
So, for now the pressure is not for the Coalition to end or Clegg to go but for him to fight harder and more publicly for Lib Dem policies and against what he himself called this morning "a return to Thatcherism".
Stand by, therefore, for more Coalition rows on the NHS, on banking reform, on immigration and tax. Standby for less ministerial chumminess and more business-like negotiations.
Don't hold your breath though for a change of leader or an end to the Coalition.
Most Liberal Democrats will try first to prove - in Paddy Ashdown's words - that "compromise is not betrayal".

Great day at Ground Zero on Thursday. The weather sunny, cool, and clear was more than a little like it was on the morning of September 11, 2001. For a lot of folks around New York City, that kind of a day always brings back memories of 9/11.
The mood was somber not sad. Solemn. Serious. Satisfied. Not triumphalist. Not vengeful. Not smug.
Satisfied.
Obama looks thin, but he doesn't look hungry. He looks satisfied as if an actual fucking mission had actually been fucking accomplished. People accuse him of preening? Lord. If Bush and Cheney had had the chance to take this victory lap, we'd need no DNA test to prove Bin Laden's death: W would have Osama's balls on a necklace, Cheney would have his skull on a pike, and the Fox News jingoes would be decrying term limits during wartime.
The few words Obama spoke after the wreath-laying were inaudible to the media; he spoke to the victims' families and the first-responders, briefly, and then he left. Ten minutes before the event was supposed to begin, Elvis had left the building: Counter-terrorism at its most basic level.
The site itself is beginning to rise. Not just Tower One the Freedom Tower and Tower Four, and the Memorial: the entire sixteen acres are coming up from the ground literally. It's a complex, profound resurrection. I've been visiting here since June 2005, when it was still raw slab-on-grade seventy feet below street level, and for years, the tumult of construction has masked the deeper and more contemplative aspects of this patch of land.

The other day, one of the guys over at the insolent political lampoonery known as Wonkette.com plugged into Google a couple paragraphs of a column by Chuck Norris yes, that Chuck Norris; he's syndicated, and he's scary conservative and discovered that his copy was, well, copy-and-pasted. Which wasn't all that surprising given that we live in an age when 7 percent of American students' papers come from Wikipedia and when, you know, Chuck Norris is a noted political commentator. But surely he wasn't the only text bootlegger in the blogosphere.
Wonkette's "investigation" checks out when run through more advanced verification software like iThenticate, which rose to prominence in 2006 when creator John Berrie's algorithm caught Ann Counter lifting passages for her book Goddess. The iThenticate program cross-checks writing across billions of online documents for sourcing issues as well as straight-up plagiarism, and Berrie gave me unlimited access for a week of follow-up work. The system takes a little getting used to, which is why the world still needs watchdogs and ombudsmen. But really, it's a bloviator's nightmare....

To think that elections used to be boring. Predictable.
Just like the general election held exactly a year ago - today produced results no-one predicted with consequences which are totally unpredictable.
Many may have foreseen the drubbing Nick Clegg's Liberal Democrats would receive but few foresaw its scale - losing not just to Labour in the Northern cities, not just to the SNP in Scotland but - irony of ironies - to their coalition partners the Conservatives in parts of the South.
And who would have dared predict that David Cameron would be out tonight celebrating councils and councillors gained - if, that is, he hadn't decreed that his party must not be seen to gloat.
And all this before the final results of a referendum which looks certain to bring suppressed grins to Tory faces and further gloom to Liberal Democrats.
So what now for the coalition? The talk is of a more business-like, less chummy relationship; of some disagreements publicly aired rather than always privately resolved; of Liberal Democrats fighting - their chosen word - to avoid what Nick Clegg called this morning "a return to Thatcherism".
How will that work? No-one can possibly know. Just as no-one can know how the new Scottish government will manage with a parliamentary majority committed to delivering independence whilst public opinion shows no appetite for it.
David Cameron and Alex Salmond are the two clear winners of today but they may soon be pondering that old Chinese proverb - be careful what you wish for.

In case you missed newly-declared presidential candidate hosting visiting Sean Hannity's Fox News program on Wednesday evening, feel free to watch the video herein. But maybe you prefer interviews that begin with questions, or journalism that contains more of the facts and less of the boosting of recent employees. John H. Richardson's profile of Gingrich in Esquire last year "The Indispensable Republican" is that kind of journalism. It's the kind that takes Gingrich's "answers" on Wednesday (witness this Holder slander: "His record out of office between the Clinton years and today was such that it should have disqualified him from serving ... and in fact the U.S. House should be investigating what his beliefs") and answers for them. Newt said it himself: "If you're a conservative, you have to start with the assumption that you're not gonna get an even break from the elite media." Even, yes; a break, never.
After the jump, quotes from Gingrich on Fox, and facts from Esquire....

I predicted/warned you, despite what the doubters said.
I've got the world's leading economic organisations/economists on my side.
Obama agrees with me/me.
I am right and you are wrong.
Today's growth figures do not and cannot prove whether George Osborne or Ed Balls was right.
What they will do is ensure that the political debate will not just be about how to tackle the deficit, but how to get the economy growing faster again.
For years politicians on all sides have told us that they want to see the British economy re-balanced - to become less dependent on financial services and the South East. A period of low growth, spending cuts and rising taxes may make those words sound rather less attractive than they once did.

In a stunning development one day after the release of Where's the Birth Certificate? The Case that Barack Obama is not Eligible to be President, by Dr. Jerome Corsi, World Net Daily Editor and Chief Executive Officer Joseph Farah has announced plans to recall and pulp the entire 200,000 first printing run of the book, as well as announcing an offer to refund the purchase price to anyone who has already bought either a hard copy or electronic download of the book.
In an exclusive interview, a reflective Farah, who wrote the book's foreword and also published Corsi's earlier best-selling work, Unfit for Command: Swift Boat Veterans Speak out Against John Kerry and Capricorn One: NASA, JFK, and the Great "Moon Landing" Cover-Up, said that after much serious reflection, he could not go forward with the project. "I believe with all my heart that Barack Obama is destroying this country, and I will continue to stand against his administration at every turn, but in light of recent events, this book has become problematic, and contains what I now believe to be factual inaccuracies," he said this morning. "I cannot in good conscience publish it and expect anyone to believe it."
When asked if he had any plans to publish a corrected version of the book, he said cryptically, "There is no book." Farah declined to comment on his discussions of the matter with Corsi.

Elections can bring relief, agony, joy and doubt.
David Cameron must scarcely be able to believe his luck this morning.
A year after failing to win the general election and having announced deep and painful spending cuts he will be deeply relieved that - so far at least - his party has barely received a scratch from the electorate. Losses may still follow but on nothing like the scale once feared.
The reason is clear - it's his coalition partner who has absorbed all the pain. Nick Clegg will have watched in agony as his party headed towards its worst share of the vote in its history and as they were routed in the Northern cities he was so proud to control.
And then there was the surprise of the night - Scotland. The Nationalists' stunning series of results will bring them joy. They were, above all, a personal victory for Alex Salmond. He is re-shaping the politics of his country and dreams of going much further.
Which leaves Ed Miliband. Once all the results are in - he should be be able to celebrate the fact that Labour will govern Wales again, will have many more councillors and a greater share of the vote.
Yet his party will have their doubts when they see it is their enemies - the Tories and the Nationalists - who have the biggest smiles this morning.

Ashley Donaldson has had a decent couple of weeks.
The 15-year-old Plano girl found an envelope filled with $2,000 outside a Chase bank in North Dallas. When the Dallas police department told her the money would go to the city's general fund, Donaldson received more than $5,500 in donations. (The department end up handing over the money.)
And this morning, the House stood her on the dais and praised her decency.
"You don't get to hear a lot of good stories in the press," said Jodie Laubenberg, R-Parker. "This is one of them."

A group of about 40 parents and public school supporters chanted their dissatisfaction with proposed funding cuts in public education Saturday, a day after House and Senate budget negotiators reached agreement on a spending plan that would reduce education funding $2 billion a year, or $4 billion over the next two years. The group was small in comparison to most of the organized rallies in support of increased education funding this year, but they made their presence felt with loud chants outside the House and Senate chambers.
"The eyes of Texas are upon you," the protesters chanted, urging lawmakers to vote no on the proposed cuts in education. "Use the rainy day fund" was another chant - a reference to the decision of Republican leaders to not use any of the state's multi-billion-dollar rainy day fund to make up the revenue deficit that is expected to cost schools a decrease of about 6 percent from current law. Democrats have argued for use of the rainy day money to avoid the funding cuts - which are expected to cost about 30,000 jobs in school districts.
A public schools rally at the Capital this spring was attended by about 8,000 parents, teachers and public school supporters - the biggest turnout of the session on an issue. But the demonstrations failed to move legislative leaders off their decision to use the rainy day fund only to balance the current state budget that runs through August. House members are expected to take up proposals to help school districts deal with the funding cuts on Monday as well as adopt a plan to distribute the reductions among districts.

Here's how the new tradition went down in the House:
House members lined the center of the chamber, preparing to peer into the Senate as they passed its redistricting bill. The Senate coincided its vote on the House's redistricting bill.
But they didn't quite match up. And the House passed the bill before the doors opened. When they did, the chants of about 40 educators and parents barreled into the chamber. They were protesting education funding cuts.
The door shut quickly.
House members shrugged and went on to pass the Senate's revenue generating bill.

As you listen to Liberal Democrats declare that they are riding to the rescue of the NHS I can't help recalling a story I heard a while ago. It relates to Nick Clegg's reaction to attending a service at Westminster Abbey to celebrate the 60th anniversary of the NHS. As well as prayers and blessings the service on 2 July 2008 included a speech by Prime Minister Gordon Brown and the reverential playing of a sound recording of a speech by the founder of the NHS, Labour's Aneurin Bevan. Clegg complained to friends that only in Britain would they turn an organisational structure into a cause for a religious service.
Clegg, you see, is rather more radical than some have recognised. In part, that's because of his strong European roots - he was brought up by a Dutch mother, worked in Brussels for the European Commission and then became an MEP. British affection for the NHS stems partly from memories passed down the generations of what health care was like before it was created and in large part from a comparison with American healthcare. From a European perspective the NHS doesn't look that special. After all you're not asked for your credit card before going to hospital in France or Holland.
No wonder then that Clegg signed up to the Orange Book - published in September 2004 - which proposed that the UK should adopt a Euro style health insurance model. His ally David Laws - who'll be back in the spotlight this week - wrote the chapter which observed that:
"The NHS is a system that fails to allow for the disciplines of choice, diversity and competition which can help to ratchet up standards"
The current NHS proposals were drawn up not just by the Tory Andrew Lansley but by his Lib Dem Deputy Paul Burstow. They were reviewed and approved not just by the Conservative Oliver Letwin but by Clegg's soulmate Danny Alexander. The foreword to them was signed not just by David Cameron but by Nick Clegg too.
So they are, to coin a phrase, all in it together when it comes to the NHS.
Both Cameron and Clegg realised too late the political danger of the reforms they'd agreed to. Both are now trying to reassure voters that they are not planning to privatise the NHS and to assuage the anger of hospital consultants and nurses who fear that GPs will not fund them as generously as politicians who, down the years, have found campaigns to keep hospitals open hard to resist. Both know NHS reforms that go wrong could destroy their personal as well as political reputations.
The battle is on for the credit for changes which - in broad outline if not all detail - have, I'm told, been agreed. After staging 100 meetings in which 10,000 NHS staff have been engaged I am told by a Tory source that it is a statement of the obvious that "no bill is better than a bad bill" but that "everyone expects to improve and not dump" the NHS plan.
Lest anyone read this blog as me suggesting that the Lib Dems are a threat to the NHS or that both Coalition partners are equally a threat let me be clear. I am not. Indeed, choice, diversity and competition are words that were used by previous Labour Health Secretaries who allowed private companies to provide not just cleaning or pharmaceutical but clinical services.
Ever since the NHS became a national religion politicians have competed to say that they love it more or can be trusted to save it. However, for more than two decades - ever since the Conservative White Paper of 1989 when Margaret Thatcher decided to keep the health service and not to dismantle it - debate has been about how much choice, diversity and competition it is possible and desirable to have within the NHS.
Update 17:00: Lib Dem sources insist it was their man - not the prime minister - who brought about the "pause" in the NHS reforms when he threatened to halt the Bill altogether if David Cameron refused to review it.
In response to my earlier post they do not deny that Nick Clegg is a "health reformer" and you can see why. Thanks to The Independent for reminding me of an interview they ran in September 2005 in which Clegg - then his party's foreign affairs spokesman - said "I think breaking up the NHS is exactly what you do need to do to make it a more responsive service" and refused to rule out an insurance based model.
"I don't think anything should be ruled out. I think it would be really, really daft to rule out any other model from Europe or elsewhere. I do think they deserve to be looked out because frankly the faults of the British health service compared to others still leave much to be desired."

The Power of Politics Election day Republican Democrat Governor
He lives in a walled compound within sight of the nation's most elite military academy. Does the military know he's there? Of course it does. It has to. His proximity to the elite military academy is part of the reason he chose to live where he does. He is notoriously concerned about his security, and living close to a military nerve center makes him feel safer. Besides, he is an enthusiastic supporter of his country's military, though not of its government. He is friendly with some of the officers who teach at the academy, and sometimes volunteers to teach their classes, the better to influence the young minds who will comprise his country's next generation of leadership. So, although he is always surrounded by the security personnel on his payroll, he's not exactly living in secret, or, for that matter, in poverty. He lives not in a cave along with other zealots and die-hards but rather in a mansion built just for him and his third wife, about five years ago.
Indeed, for all his open enmity for the government of the United States of America, Fox News chief Roger Ailes may be living right under the government's nose, in Garrison, New York, just across the Hudson River from the United States Military Academy at West Point. It beggars belief to think that he is able to live there without the cooperation, or even the protection, of the highest levels of the administration he has vowed to bring down. It beggars belief to think that if the administration wanted to find him, it wouldn't know exactly where to look.
And yet for some reason President Obama and the rest of his administration continue to turn a blind eye to Ailes's anti-government activities, even as Ailes continues to practice them. To be sure, Ailes has been relatively quiet of late, and has been weakened by his public schism with the most extreme and seditious of his lieutenants, the charismatic carny-barker of the conspiratorial right, Glenn Beck. But if the administration thinks that Ailes is softening his anti-government stance, it is only fooling itself, or letting itself be fooled. After all...

Rep. Myra Crownover's "elegant little amendment" lit up the House this evening.
Crownover, R-Denton, wants to ban smoking in public places like bars and restaurants. She tacked her amendment to the Senate's non-tax revenue bill the House is currently debating. She estimates it will save the state at least $30 million in Medicaid costs.
The amendment passed 73-66, but not before a bit of a flare up.
Rep. Lois Kolkhorst, R-Brenham, got angry when she heard Rep. David Smith, R-Longview, ask to expand the smoking ban to include perfume. She told him to take the issue seriously and show some decor. He pulled his amendment.
Amendments did pass with exemptions to pool halls, bingo tournaments and fraternal organizations. No bowling alleys?
The House grew somber when Crownover explained her personal attachment. Her husband died of leukemia. One of the major causes of that cancer is benzene, she said, a carcinogen in second-hand smoke.
