With the Texas Legislature convenes today, the House is expected to overwhelmingly re-elect Rep. Joe Straus (right) as its speaker. Here's a report from Robert T. Garrett and Christy Hoppe on a Republican House caucus Monday that reflected overwhelming House support for Straus.
But Straus, a San Antonio Republican, isn't conservative enough for some, and about 300 protesters -- many aligned with the tea party movement -- showed up in Austin yesterday to shiver on the Capitol steps and let it be known that they'd rather see the speaker's gavel go to Rep. Ken Paxton of McKinney, a longshot challenger to Straus.
As Erin Mulvaney wrote on Monday, some of the protesters handed Wet Wipes to House members as they left the Capitol. A message on each package said in part, "Pontius Pilot had to wash his hands after a bad decision too. Hope you won't need this for the same reason. We are watching." (It's actually Pontius Pilate, but I'm sure the House members got the message.)
Ross Ramsey of the Texas Tribune said the tea party folks also delivered a more secular warning:
"Many of the demonstrators," he wrote, "wore stickers with 3/6/12 on them: That's the date of the next Republican primary election."
