Super Friends!*

If it wasn't clear before this morning's welcoming ceremony, it's clear now what Chinese President Hu Jintao is doing in America this week, and why we invited him. He's here to formally introduce his country as a superpower. We asked him to come so that we could get this new relationship off on a good foot. President Obama gave President Hu a 21-gun salute; President Hu gave President Obama a series of massive economic deals. (Two-hundred Boeing jets, a railroad contract with G.E., up to 235,000 jobs-worth of free stimulus: it sure beats a bottle of merlot.)

Of course, it's possible to see this latest visit by a Chinese leader as one in a continuum, and doing so is certainly in the American interest: it maintains the image of a fatherly king guiding an adolescent prince to responsible manhood. No surprise, then, that Obama painted it as such in his remarks.

But really, who can quite believe it?

Though these visits have gone on regularly for nearly 40 years now...
