Well, that was funnish. Elections are always a bit of a thrill, more so when change is in the air; but in the end, last night went just about as predicted.
For a change, maybe we should let the politicians speak for themselves. First, senator and de facto Tea Party boss Jim DeMint, who, in the Journal this morning warns the incoming class of Tea Party freshmen not to get caught up in the Washington pay-to-play economy:
Many of the people who will be welcoming the new class of Senate conservatives to Washington never wanted you here in the first place. The establishment is much more likely to try to buy off your votes than to buy into your limited-government philosophy. Consider what former GOP senator-turned-lobbyist Trent Lott told the Washington Post earlier this year: "As soon as they get here, we need to co-opt them."
DeMint has the relative luxury of leading from the rear as a contrarian in a minority caucus, he has less to lose in crossing his leadership and so can risk a little rebellion. But to be fair, the practical advice he gives the freshmen for maintaining their independence is sensible and...
