Do Not Steal (or Read) This Book

Sarah Palin's new book is coming out next week. By all accounts it's as mendacious, meretricious, and, to any thinking person, as dull as the first one. Don't waste a brain cell on it.

The only thing this non-event makes me think about is the mystery of why anybody reads the memoirs of active politicians in the first place. Yes, I include President Obama's Dreams From My Father on my mental list, although that was the rare example of the species that actually contained, you know, some memoir. Instead, what books like Palin's and Mitt Romney's do (what, you haven't read No Apology? Call his PAC, they have lots of extras lying around) is lard their "author's" political philosophy with a few gooey gobs of nostalgia. This establishes that said philosophy springs from Life Lessons, which as we all know are way more true than anything you might read in a book. (Other than the book that contains them, of course — it's Real American scripture.)

But aside from the obvious fact that the same philosophy can be enjoyed for free on any political memoirist's Web site, Twitter feed, and Facebook page, there is a deeper kind of stupidity at work...
