Republicans add diversity to their overwhelming numbers

The earthquake that swallowed Democrats on Tuesday night also produced something that the Texas House hasn't seen in a few years: minority GOP members. Not only that, the election produced a record number of black (1) and Hispanics (5 -- with an asterick) Republicans that will serve in the House.

Among the new minority members are James White in East Texas and Stefani Carter in North Dallas -- the first black Republicans to serve in modern history.

The new Latino members are Raul Torres, replacing Solomon Ortiz Jr. from Corpus Christi; Jose Aliseda, replacing Yvonne Gonzalez Toureilles of Alice; Larry Gonzales, replacing Diana Maldonado of Round Rock and John Garza, replacing David Liebowtiz of San Antonio. Dee Margo, replacing Joe Moody of El Paso, said in this election cycle that he was part Hispanic by virtue of having a great grandparent who was Mexican.

The Hispanic Republicans of Texas are holding a press conference to introduce the new members on Thursday. Party chairman Steve Munisteri pledged that Hispanic outreach would be a major part of the GOP under his stewardship.
