Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison, appearing just now on FOX Business, said she did not foresee President Barack Obama following in former President Clinton's footsteps of pivoting toward the center after an electoral drubbing.
Hutchison recalled that after the 1994 midterms, when the GOP took over the House, Clinton made overtures toward the Republicans, particularly on the issue of welfare reform.
"Having been there when Bill Clinton got a shellacking, he pivoted. He did start sort of triangulating, as they called it," she told host Neil Cavuto. "I don't see that with President Obama so far."
She added that Obama's news conference, held Wednesday afternoon, did not reveal much on the Democrats' plan to work during the lame duck session on the Bush tax cuts, which are set to expire on Dec. 31.
"I didn't get a clear message," she said. "Certainly he is willing to talk. I got that."
Hutchison said Republican should work with the president to tweak tax policy and last spring's health care reform bill in order to make the policies more friendly to small businesses.
Obama, in his news conference today, said he'd work with Republicans to change at least one provision in the health care bill: a requirement for businesses to file tax forms on purchases and transactions worth over $600.
