How the Kid from Searchlight Returned to Washington

Here in the Silver State, it was one small step for the sane, and a giant leap for sanity.

Maybe the biggest surprise here the morning after (aside from the cottony sensation on the inside of my mouth) is that the embarrassing reactionaries at the Las Vegas Review-Journal even deigned to acknowledge the fact that Harry Reid had survived. But even this paper, the editor and publisher of which shamelessly shilled for the extremist Sharron Angle, was forced to bow to reality. REID WINS read its banner this morning. As much as they and an almost unanimous national press (I'm looking at you, Chuck Todd) had this Senate race conforming to Democratic Leader Tom Daschle's 2004 defeat at the hands of John Thune, it didn't happen. And all those unanimous polls since October 1 that supported this narrative? Meh. An enormous waste of time and money. And the power of the Tea Party? Eh. Turns out that undifferentiated rage doesn't make you smart after all.

A quick note on all three of those points — the three decisive reasons why Harry Reid won....
