Senator cracks wise about hand-off of state cemetery

X00085_9.jpgSen. Kel Seliger, R-Amarillo, looked puzzled as he asked a question at Thursday afternoon's Senate Finance Committee hearing. He noted that the Legislative Budget Board staff has proposed that lawmakers transfer the Texas State Cemetery in East Austin, now managed by the Facilities Commission, to a portfolio of buildings -- the Capitol, Governor's Mansion and State History Museum -- that are looked after by the Preservation Board.

GOP leaders' initial budgets assume a bill will be passed to bless the proposed shift, which allows them to book $200,000 of savings from what Budget Board staff calls "indirect administration costs."

"What's the difference?" Seliger (right, 2005 AP photo) asked Preservation Board executive director John Sneed.

Seliger continued, "To the best of my knowledge, the occupants haven't been complaining."

"No, sir," Sneed replied. "I haven't heard any complaints myself."
