Geoff Berg hasn't met Tommy Lee Jones. He has only "an inkling" of the actor's politics. But Berg, a Houston lawyer and liberal radio commentator, is a Texas Democrat: D as in desperate, which he quickly admits to being.
So he's launched the political equivalent of a Hail Mary pass in football: He's created a Draft Tommy Lee Jones website, which went up Wednesday.
"Name me someone who brings as much to the table as he does -- on our side," Berg asked me this evening.
OK, Geoff, I give up. And that's his point, of course. Can you think of anyone to save the Texas Democratic Party from another high 30s (Barbara Ann Radnofsky) or low 40s (Rick Noriega) embarrassment in a Senate race? Berg says Jones, who lives outside San Antonio, is from San Saba, is bilingual and a household name would immediately be credible in next year's Senate race.
"It would instantly energize Democrats, that's for sure," he said. "It would energize the entire state to see him do something like this."
