After listening to Rick Perry mock their state for a couple of years, California officials are firing back. Perry's California-bashing was good politics in last year's reelection race in Texas. The Texan's message was simple: We have a better business climate and have created lots more jobs here than California. All true. But Californians weary of Perry say his selective critique leaves out a lot - California has higher-paying jobs, much less pollution, the country's best state university system, pristine beaches, a booming high-tech industry that beats Texas in venture capital 10-to-one. And of course, Texas is in the midst of a multi-billion budget mess, just like California. California Gov. Jerry Brown wants a combination of taxes and cuts to balance its budget. Perry is pressing a tea-party friendly cuts-only approach.![]()

As we reported today, California state Treasurer Bill Lockyer made it abundantly clear that California doesn't want to be Texas. "Clearly, there's more commitment to environmental protection here than there seems to be in Texas," he told me recently. "There's more tolerance of poor people with poor public services there than here." And the war of words isn't over - We'll have more tomorrow.
Look for a top Californian to compare Perry with their governor.
He put it this way: Brown's a "manager of government." And Perry? "A ribbon-cutter."
