Republicans ask for public records as Napolitano eyes Senate run

Sen. John Cornyn has long been an advocate of the public's right to access government records. As Texas Attorney General, Cornyn took open records violators to court and created an open records hotline. During his first term as Senator, he co-sponsored legislation to expand the Freedom of Information Act.

So it's only fitting that the champion of open government would use the right to access public documents to dig up dirt on potential Democratic candidates.

On Tuesday, the National Republican Senatorial Committee, of which Cornyn is the chair, submitted an open records request to the Department of Homeland Security, according to The Hill.

The request asks for "correspondence between Napolitano and Obama adviser David Plouffe, the Arizona Democratic Party and all three national Democratic campaign committees from the past two years."

Napolitano, a Democrat, was the Governor of Arizona from 2003 to 2009, when she stepped down to become Secretary of Homeland Security. After Sen. Jon Kyl, R-Ariz., announced last week that he would not seek reelection, Democratic operatives have suggested that Napolitano might make a run for the seat.
