Rep. Sam Johnson, R-Plano, marked the 38 anniversary of his return to Texas from the Vietnam War by leading the House in a moment of silence to honor the troops.

After the moment of silence, Johnson was cheered and applauded by his fellow congressmen.

"Thirty eight years ago today, Sam Johnson stepped off a plane in Texas after being held as a prisoner of war for seven years in Vietnam," Speaker of the House John Boehner said after the moment of silence. "He is a great American."

On April 16, 1966, Johnson's F-4 Phantom was shot down over North Vietnam. Johnson spent the next seven years as a prisoner of war, including 42 months in solitary confinement at the infamous Hanoi Hilton.

Johnson was finally reunited with his wife Shirley at Sheppard Air Force Base in 1973 as part of Operation Homecoming. Here is a picture of their reunion on the tarmac.
