Lt. Gov. David Dewhurst announced Senate committee chairs and membership for the 2011 session on Friday. Most chairs remained unchanged from last year, including those represented by senators from North Texas. "From balancing the budget to redistricting, we have a lot to accomplish this session in a relatively short period of time, but I'm confident that our senators and committees are up to the challenge," Dewhurst said.

North Texas senators who will chair committees this session are John Carona, R-Dallas, business and commerce; Robert Deuell, R-Greenville, nominations; Chris Harris, R-Arlington, jurisprudence; Jane Nelson, R--Flower Mound, health and human services; Florence Shapiro, R-Plano, education; and Royce West, D-Dallas, intergovernmental relations. Steve Ogden, R-Bryan, remains as chairman of the finance committee and Kel Seliger, R-Amarillo, will head a select committee on redistricting.

Some of those committees are expected to hold organizational meetings next week before Senate leaders begin assigning hundreds of bills to the various committees. The Senate Finance Committee will hold its first state budget meeting on Monday.
