John Kuempel coasts to victory in special Texas House election

The GOP rout just got routier.

John Kuempel ran away from a crowded field in a special election Tuesday and will succeed his father, the late Rep. Ed Kuempel, in representing Texas House District 44.

The younger Kuempel captured almost 66 percent of the vote -- a feat, considering that there were nine other names on the ballot. His closest challenger barely got 10 percent.

John Kuempel is a Republican from Seguin, as was his father. His victory gives the GOP 101 of the 150 seats in the House, one more than the two-thirds majority that enables the Republicans to control the House agenda without the support of a single Democrat.

District 44
includes Gonzalez, Guadalupe, and Wilson counties east of San Antonio.
